Coin flip
Press the button and the coin lands on heads or tails, each with the same chance. It is the fastest way to settle something that has exactly two sides.
How to use
- 1.Press the flip button.
- 2.Read the result: heads or tails.
- 3.Flip again for another, independent result.
A genuine fifty-fifty
The result comes from the browser's cryptographic random generator, with two outcomes and no weighting, so each flip is an even chance. A real coin is slightly less even than this: how it is caught, how many times it turns, and tiny differences between the faces all tilt it a fraction. The meaningful difference runs the other way — a physical coin is something everyone in the room can watch land.
Each flip forgets the last one
Four heads in a row does not make tails more likely next time, and that run is not rare: it turns up about once every sixteen flips. The feeling that tails is somehow owed is the gambler's fallacy, and it is why best of three settles arguments better than a single flip — three flips make one unlucky run less decisive.
When two sides are not enough
A coin only answers questions that have exactly two answers. Three or more options need the random wheel, and picking a person out of a group needs the name picker. Forcing a multi-way decision into a series of coin flips quietly changes the odds: two flips cannot split three options evenly.
Frequently asked questions
Is the coin flip fair?
Yes. Both outcomes have the same chance, from the browser's cryptographic generator. There is no bias toward either side and no memory of previous flips.
Can I flip several coins at once?
Not on this page. Use the random number generator with a range of 1 to 2 and repeats allowed, then read 1 as heads.
Why did I get the same side five times?
Because that is normal. A run of five is expected roughly once in thirty-two flips, and each flip is independent of the ones before it.
Is it as random as a real coin?
It is more even than a real coin, which is slightly biased by how it is thrown and caught. What a real coin has that this does not is witnesses.
