Random team generator

Paste one name per line, say how many teams you want, and the list is shuffled and dealt out. The teams come out as even as the headcount allows.

0 names in the list

How to use

  1. 1.Paste the names, one per line. The count under the box tells you how many it read.
  2. 2.Set how many teams to split into.
  3. 3.Press draw. Press again for a completely different split.

How the split stays even

The list is shuffled with a Fisher-Yates pass driven by the browser's cryptographic generator, then dealt round-robin into the teams — so eleven people across two teams gives six and five, never seven and four. One further step matters: the teams themselves are shuffled afterwards, so the team that ends up a person short is random rather than always the last one.

Even is not the same as balanced

The split is even in headcount and random in everything else. It does not know who is good, who played last week, or who should not be on the same side. When balance by ability matters, the approach that works is to separate the strongest players into buckets by hand and randomise within each bucket.

Teams of a fixed size

This page asks how many teams, which is the right question when the number of groups is fixed: two sides, four tables. When the size is what is fixed, as with pairs, the random pair generator is the one you want — it works out the number of groups from how many people you paste.

Frequently asked questions

Can I set the team size instead of the number of teams?

Not on this page. The random pair generator does it for groups of two; for other sizes, divide your headcount by the size you want and use that as the number of teams.

Does it balance by skill or position?

No. It only randomises. Nothing here knows anything about the people in the list.

What happens with an odd number of people?

The teams differ by one person, and which team is short is decided randomly rather than always falling on the last one.

Could the same split come up twice?

In principle yes, in practice almost never for lists of any size, because the number of possible splits grows very fast. Each press is independent, so nothing prevents it.
