Random order generator

Paste a list and get all of it back in a random order. Nothing is picked and nothing is dropped: it is the same list, rearranged.

0 names in the list

How to use

  1. 1.Paste the list, one item per line.
  2. 2.Press the button. Every line comes back, in a new order.
  3. 3.Press again for a different order of the same list.

Shuffling, not picking

A picker takes some items and leaves the rest. A shuffle keeps all of them and changes only the sequence. That is what you want for a running order, a presentation schedule, a turn order or a playlist, where the question is not who is in but who is first.

A proper shuffle

The rearrangement is a Fisher-Yates pass: walk the list from the end and swap each item with one chosen uniformly from the part not yet fixed. Every possible ordering comes out equally likely, which sounds obvious but is exactly what the naive approach of sorting by a random number per item gets subtly wrong. The random choices come from the browser's cryptographic generator with the modulo bias removed.

Using it for turn order

A shuffled order settles who goes first without anyone choosing, and because every item is kept nobody can be skipped by accident. If the order should change each round, shuffle again rather than reversing it: reversing puts the same person last, and last is usually the position being argued over.

Frequently asked questions

Does it keep every item?

Yes. Nothing is removed and nothing is duplicated — the output is the same lines in a different order.

How is this different from the name picker?

The picker draws a few and discards the rest. This returns the whole list rearranged.

Can I shuffle numbers?

Yes, numbers are just lines of text here. For a numeric range it is quicker to use the random number generator with repeats off.

Is every order equally likely?

Yes. Fisher-Yates with an unbiased random source produces every permutation with the same probability.

Running a giveaway on an Instagram post?

The comment picker reads the post, counts the entries and produces a public verification page with a code anyone can open — things a list pasted by hand cannot prove. Free up to 100 comments.
